The 2024 CMU Gus Macker class is officially reporting to Finch Fieldhouse for flight training and they’ve got the NEED FOR SPEED! This year’s theme is inspired by the movie “Top Gun,” as the CMU Macker is the only Gus Macker tournament that is allowed to alter their theme. This year is also the 50th anniversary of Gus Macker, LLC with teams around the country uniting for this historic achievement.
The first week of class is nicknamed “Traditions Day” where each of the students are initiated into what it means to be part of the CMU Gus Macker family – which, with this class, totals 411 students strong. To make this a very momentous occasion, T.O. and that TA’s made sure to embrace everyone with open arms with custom name tags, welcome notes, color-coded shirts and tons of Macker and Top Gun swag!
Fun Fact: Did you know that on the flight deck of a U.S Navy aircraft carrier that everyone is color coded according to their job? Well… so is the Gus Macker class! TA’s are yellow, Court Captains are brown, Gusette & Blogger and Sponsor Relations and Raffles are blue, Promo & Public Address is white, Volunteers & Contests and Facility
Operations are Green and Launch & Volunteer Parties and Opening Ceremonies and Hospitality are purple. Make sure to check in weekly to learn about each of these amazing positions and how they are gearing up for tournament weekend!
During this week’s class, students were filled on a plethora of Gus Macker information to make sure they are ready to take off at Mach 10 speed. They were taken through the meaning of YOMO (You Only Macker Once), the purpose of 1-2-YOU, prepping for the silent auction and Launch Party (stay tuned!) and meeting each other (with their call signs!) and the 2024 TA’s. This year’s TA’s are Madison Moore (call sign: Moomad); Roy Workman (call sign: Kicks); Jenna Steeb (call sign: The Kid) and the only returning TA Mackenzie Miller (call sign: Tweener). Finally, the students practiced the “Macker Tunnel” and took their first day of school photos - see below for some of our favorites!
