Week 11 - Suzi's Bag of Tricks

This week, the crew was visited by a Gus Macker and CMU legend: Dr. Lori Irwin. Lori has been intimately involved in the CMU Gus Macker Basketball Festival and RPL 333 for about 12 of the 14 years it has taken place. She is a part of both the Gus Macker Hall of Fame and the CMU Gus Macker Hall of the Fame. In addition, she brought with her the mini Golden Doodle pup who is always fired up, Gus, who is named after the one and only, Gus Macker!

Lori walked the crew through the best practices of volunteer management. This included why volunteers are the lifeblood of events, how to make sure volunteers are prepared and empowered, and how to utilize volunteers to make future events even better. This used to be a speech that was done by Suzi Tengen, T.O.’s mother, who ran the volunteers for the Amy Otteman Memorial Classic, a golf outing to support the passing of her daughter Amy who was an oncology nurse. Over the course of 15 years, the golf outing raised $185,000 that has been put towards the Amy Otteman Memorial Fund at McLaren Central Michigan Hospital. To make all of the magic happen, Suzi would carry what she called her "Bag of Tricks," a fanny pack that carried anything and everything for an event, including quarters for phone calls, even long after payphones went out of use! She also has two famous cookie recipes, specially for the CMU Gus Macker class. These include the Macker Oatmeal Cookies and Macker Snickerdoodle Cookies.

Two new contests are coming the CMU Gus Macker Basketball Festival! First is the Free Throw Contest taking place on Saturday, April 27th from 9 am to 4 pm. This contest requires the payment of $2, and can include both players and spectators. The second contest is on Sunday, April 28th from 9 am to 4 pm and is the 3-Point Contest. This contest has a maximum of 15 shots with a maximum time of 90 seconds. For both contests, half of the collected money will be awarded to the winner.
